TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: '2me Carte du Tunquin'

A very scarce late-18th century map of northern Vietnam (Tonkin / Tongkin / Tonquin / Tongking) and parts of southern China, compiled from Jesuit missionary reports. This unusual map covers the coast, the Red River delta and interior of what is now Vietnam and adjacent parts of China from Hainan Island south as far as Koue-hoe (Hue, Vietnam, ancient capital of Cochinchina), and westwards as far as Tchely (described as "capitale du pays dans le Yunnan" - possibly Kunming). The map includes part of Hainan Island, Ha Long Bay and the Gulf of Tonkin. Tong-Tou (noted to be the "capitale du Tonquin" - most likely Hanoi) is marked. Numerous towns and villages are marked, along with the borders of the Kingdom of Tonkin. Curiously, the Red River is not shown to have an outflow to the sea. The map was engraved by Jean Dominique Etienne Canu in Paris, for publication within Yves Mathurin Marie Treaudet de Querboeuf's "Lettres Edifiantes et Curieuses". We're unable to find any record of this map having been offered for sale either through a dealer or at auction
