CONTENTS AND DESCRIPTION
A very interesting and probably very scarce
Atlas. The colored maps are by W & A K Johnston of London & Edinburgh. It
would appear to have been produced specifically by the large Edinburgh &
Glasgow department store - Forsyths. The stores were situated at 30 Princes
Street, Edinburgh & Renfrew Street, corner of Gordon Street, Glasgow. They
describe themselves as 'Home and Foreign Outfitters'. Each map has a small
cartouche top & bottom. These feature different departments of the store -
'School Outfitters', 'University Robe Makers', 'Tartan Manufacturers' 'Bag &
Trunk Makers', 'Highland Ornament Makers' and many more. See example on
left.
With the common base of Edinburgh, it seems
likely that the Forsyth family probably knew the Johnstons, and this atlas
was published as a result. It's circulation must have been quite small,
presumably confined to the Edinburgh & Glasgow areas. Certainly the writer
has never seen the atlas nor any of the maps in 25 years!
In addition to the maps there are 2
