These excellent and scarce copper
plate engravings, depict many aspects of hairdressing, wig making etc in the
18th century. They show a salon, combs, brushes, shaving utensils, razors, etc.,
scissors, technical drawings, even bath houses, 2 of which were boats anchored
on the River Seine in Paris, France, in 1761. The prints depict not just barbers
at work, but also the provision of the services of a beautician, coiffeur or
coiffeuse, apart from hair stylists, and shavers. Veritable tonsorial artists of
their time.

They are a truly fascinating
record of the industrial processes towards the end of the 18th century & the
machinery and equipment used to make paper. Indeed, the very paper onto which
these engravings were printed, would have be manufactured with machines of this
calibre. State of the art at the time !
*The artists involved were under the direction of Monsieur Benard.
Regretfully we have been unable to translate some of the technical
terms into English, despite the assistance of on-line French-English translation
