A Brief History of George Franklin Cram's Career
(1842 - 1928)
In 1867, George Cram and his uncle, Rufus Blanchard, founded a company that manufactured and sold maps and Atlases, based in Evanston, Illinois. It was named Blanchard and Cram.
Two years later, in 1869 George became the sole owner of the company which progressed to being suppliers to travelling Book Salesmen. It was moved to Chicago and its name was changed to the George F. Cram Company.
After the great Chicago fire in 1871, the company was rebuilt and reverted to its original goal of selling maps and atlases. It was renamed as the Cram Map Depot.
In1875 the Cram Map Depot began publishing an extensive selection of atlases including the Atlas of the World series. This series was in print for approximately seventy years from the 1880's.
After 54 years of manufacturing maps and atlases George F. Cram retired and sold his company in May 1921. He died seven years later in March 1928.
The company survived and is still active today and is again known as The George F. Cram Company.
