Some Background information about the prints and the Illustrator: Captain Batty

The prints in this work are truly beautiful images. As a result they are quite scarce. It is hard to put into words just how attractive they are, nonetheless, I shall try.

The architecture is depicted with accuracy and is framed with the surrounding scenery which makes it stand out all the more. The buildings themselves appear to be quite new and this is enhanced by the stonemasons working nearby.

The images have great depth to them and the French people are shown engaging in various activities. Their elegance is depicted with a sense of poetry and enjoyment of life.

The detail in the images is intricate, for example the Gallery of the Louvre. This image has enormous depth, the eye is drawn down the immense corridor of paintings, each one shown in all its grandeur. The decorative ceiling is not merely represented but intricately drawn yet not so much that the distance is not depicted.

Perhaps due to his military career, the parade at the Palace of the Chamber of Deputies is outstanding. Each horse is drawn individually, showing their personality and together with the soldiers and stage-coach they create an overall elegance to the scene.

It is obvious that Batty enjoyed observing and translating onto paper the scenery that he witnessed by the minute detail of his drawings. Take a look at the images listed below to witness this extraordinary draughtsman's work for yourself.

LIEUTENANT-COLONEL (OR CAPTAIN) ROBERT BATTY FRS (1789-1848) In addition to his military life, Batty was a topographer and illustrator. His father was a surgeon (to whom this work is dedicated).

Batty (Jr.) was a student of Caius College, Cambridge, England and joined the Grenedier Guards in 1813. He served at Waterloo and the Peninsular War, however, he was wounded at Waterloo never to continue his military career.

Instead he travelled widely for the rest of his life, producing exquisite drawings which he later published in numerous books. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, 1813-48.

In May, 1977, at a sale at Mentmore, Sixty of Batty's original drawings from the publication: Hanoverian and Saxon Scenery, fetched £40,000 a price that was unprecedented.

Batty's work can also be found in the following: A Sketch of the Late Campaign in the Netherlands - 1815; Historical Sketch of the Campaign of 1815 - 1820; Campaign of the Left Wing of the Allied Army... - 1823; Welsh Scenery - 1823; German Scenery - 1823; Scenery of the Rhine, Belgium and Holland - 1826; Hanoverian and Saxon Scenery - 1829; Six Views of Brussels - 1830; A Family Tour Through South Holland - 1831; Select Views of the Principal Cities of Europe - 1832 and THe Mutiny and Piratical Seizure of H.M.S Bounty - 1876
