Robert MORDEN (Died 1703) was a Cartographer geographer and publisher. He worked in London collaborating with many of his contemporaries. His best know work appeared in Wm. Camden's Britannia - English County Maps. Various editions from 1695 onwards. He also produced maps for various World Atlases.

THE TITLE PAGE

GEOGRAPHY ANATOMIZ'D IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY SCARCE.

THE EARLIER, 17th CENTURY EDITIONS, CONTAINED MAPS BY John SENEX.

THIS 7th EDITION CONTAINED 16 ATTRACTIVE MINIATURE MAPS by Robert MORDEN, which had been produced prior to his death.

THE COPY ON WHICH THIS WEB PAGE IS BASED, CONTAINED SEVERAL MAPS WITH ORIGINAL COLORING, WHICH IS UNUSUAL, AS MOST COPIES OF THE ATLAS WERE ISSUED UNCOLORED.

THEY ARE LISTED IN THE ORDER IN WHICH THEY APPEAR IN THE ATLAS. EACH MAP HAS A FAIRLY WIDE BORDER, WHICH WE HAVE NOT SHOWN, IN ORDER TO REDUCE LOAD TIMES. HAVING BEEN SCANNED FROM THE ATLAS, IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO ELIMINATE THE EFFECT OF THE FOLDS ON SOME OF THE MAPS - THE SCANS TEND TO EXAGGERATE THESE EFFECTS.

WORLD TWIN HEMISPHERE - This map is show approximately actual size. Unusually, the map is colored. It depicts CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND.

EUROPE - The map has Original Outline Color. Attractive tiny Title Cartouche. The image is approximately actual size.

SWEDEN and NORWAY - The map of Scandinavia has Original Outline Color. The scan is approximately actual size.

MOSCOVIE OR RUSSIE - the map has an overall size of some 7x7 inches. (The engraved area 125x105 mm)

FRANCE - This uncolored general map of France is shown approx. actual size.

GERMANY - A general map of Germany. Uncolored. Approx. actual size.

POLAND - Engraved area is some 5x4 inches.

SPAIN and PORTUGAL - We have included a picture of this map as it has an attractive if very small Cartouche decoration to the Title. Approx. actual size.

ITALY - This scan has been reduced in order to show the juxtaposition of the Maps to the text.

TURKEY IN EUROPE - This includes GREECE, The BALKANS, 'GULF OF VENICE' and HUNGARY. Etc. Engraved area c.5x4.5 inches.

SCOTLAND (Scotiae nova desciptio) - An attractive map with small cartouche decoration to the Title. Approx. actual size.

ENGLAND - This includes England AND Wales. Engraved area c.5x5 inches. Cartouche title.

IRELAND - Approx. actual size.

ASIA A NEW DESCRIPTION BY ROBERT MORDEN - Approx. actual size. We could not scan out the effects of the creasing without adversely effecting the Atlas. The picture inevitably tends to exagerate the creasing.

AFRICA - The engraved area is some 5x4.5 inches.

AMERICA - The map covers North & South America. CALIFORNIA APPEARS AS AN ISLAND. The North West part of North America is still blank, an undiscovered coastline.
