Illustrated London News

The Illustrated London News, first published in 1842, was the world’s first illustrated weekly news magazine and quickly became a defining publication of the Victorian era. Combining detailed reportage with high-quality engravings, it brought major events—from royal ceremonies and wars to scientific breakthroughs and world exploration—vividly to life for a broad readership. The paper is especially celebrated for its graphic coverage of the Crimean War, the Indian Rebellion, and colonial campaigns, as well as for its city panoramas, architectural views, and maps that documented the expansion of the British Empire. At its peak, it played a central role in shaping public opinion and visual culture in 19th-century Britain and beyond.
