Some Interesting Information about the Illustrators.
THOMAS CRESWICK RA (1811-1869) Born in Sheffield, England, Creswick was an illustrator and Landscape painter, his forte being high summer British landscapes. He studied with Joseph Vincent Barber in Birmingham before he settled in London in 1828. Creswick's compositions were always of a high standard, and he was not afraid to incorporate the help of animal or figure painters such as Ansell, Goodall, Phillip or Frith. As a member of the 'Etching Club', he was commended by Ruskin for a book illustration (a rare distinction). He died in 1869 and buried at Kensal Green.
ANDREW NICHOLL RHA (1804-1886) Irish landscape painter born in Belfast. He was trained in printing with the newspaper 'The Northern Whig'. As an artist he was self-taught, worked in London, Belfast and Dublin and was elected ARHA in 1832 and RHA in 1837; he also taught art in Ceylon in 1846 after committing illustrations to 'Ireland Its Scenery and Character' in 1841. He died in London forty years later, in 1886.
HENRY G. GASTINEAU OWS (1791-1876) Topographer and landscape watercolourist. He was trained as an engraver and studied at the RA schools. He travelled extensively around Great Britain, painting picturesque scenes. He was elected Associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1821 and Old Watercolour Society in 1823. From 1827, Gastineau worked in Camberwell as a drawing-master. He died there on January 17th 1876.
WILLIAM EVANS AOWS (1809-1858) Born in Bristol, England in 1809, Evans moved to a remote area of North Wales where he studied mountain scenery. He was elected Associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1845 and moved to Italy in 1852.
