Some Background Information about this publication and the Illustrator Thomas Allom

This topographical work illustrates the counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland in Great Britain. There are not only images within this book, but descriptive text to broaden the view. The images are the basis for the descriptions and enable the reader to picture the places more accurately than if imagined entirely.

The Illustrator employed for this task (Thomas Allom) was more than capable as the prints show. They are full of activity where appropriate and in the more quiet areas the atmosphere is easy to imagine. The rural scenes juxtaposed with the industrial town views, accuratley depicts the Midlands of Great Britain.

THOMAS ALLOM (1804-1872) was a Topographical Illustrator and Architect. He was born in London, England and in 1819 he was apprenticed to the architect Francis Goodwin. Allom was a founder member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He produced designs for buildings in London and carried them out himself as well as working with the architect Sir Charles Barry on numerous projects. Allom died at the age of 68 in Barnes, London, England.

Other examples of Allom's work can be found in: Devonshire and Cornwall Illustrated and The Fashionable guide and Directory to the Public Places of Resort Illustrated with Views; The Shores and Islands of The Mediterranean Drawn From Nature - c.1840
