Some Background Information about the Maps and the Cartographer

These maps are coloured and very large (some 29x22 inches). Because of their size it is possible to show much more information than other smaller maps.

Although they had a large canvas - as such, they also produced maps of the same area, depicting different geographical information, which could not be expressed together without making the map too 'busy'. For example the British Isles is expressed in seven different cartographs, each showing different information including, geology, hydrography, parliamentary, railways, rainfall, statistical and stereoographical information.

There is much information within these maps, such as roads, railways, mountains, sea routes etc. This data is not just depicted in the cartographic area, but is set out in the form of insets in order to make it stand out.

EDWARD STANFORD Snr (1827-1904) was an engraver and publisher. He took over the Society of Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1857 and he also founded a Geographical establishment. Also, in 1857, he issued the Family Atlas and continued to publish it until 1875. The following titles were also issued by him: Library Map Australia - 1859; England & Wales - 1881; london Atlas - 1882; Handy Atlas - 1892 etc.

EDWARD STANFORD Jr (1856-1917) continued the business.
