Some Background Information About this work and the Principal Illustrator, Thomas Allom
This extensive work was undertaken in the early 19th century. It came about when painters and publishers alike, intended to create a refined taste amongst the public for vivid and conscientious representation of the beautiful scenery to be found in Great Britain. It enabled more people to view and appreciate artwork than exhibitions alone could.
A certain amount of patriotic pride became manifest and artists went to great lengths to find the most appealing of picturesque views.
The prints in this work are steel engravings and as such they are delicately executed. This enabled engravers to translate beautiful imagery onto the steel plate from which a large number of excellent impressions could be taken.
