Baker, Benjamin

Benjamin Baker (1766-1841) was an Islington map publisher and engraver. He engraved numerous maps for William Faden and various leading publishers before becoming principal engraver to the Ordnance Survey in 1804. Baker and his team came to be regarded as "the best topographical engravers in Europe" (Seymour). His elder sister married John Newton of the globe-making family. His son, Benjamin Richard Baker (1791-1876) became a surveyor, lithograper, printer and occasional map maker.
