NEW STOCK: 16th-19th century maps by Ortelius, Mercator, Hondius, Visscher, Munster et al

 

We’ve recently acquired a varied selection of mostly 16th-18th century folio maps and charts by notable cartographers including Ortelius, Mercator, Sanson, Hondius. The maps cover Europe, Asia, the Americas & the East Indies. Highlights include Munster’s bird’s eye view of Constantinople, d’Anville’s map of the Ancient World and Covens & Mortier’s map of the southern part of the Duchy of Bourgogne – which covers the Burgundy wine regions between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Fleurie. A map of the county of Artois. The map covers part of Picardy, Nord-Pas de Calais & Flanders within northern France and western Belgium. The area covered by the map stretches from Mons in the East to Ghent in the North, and Dieppe and Abbeville in the southwest. Many towns are marked including Calais, Lille, Boulogne, Dunkirk, Cambrai, Tournai & Douai. The area around Calais is named “Pais Reconquis”, the name given to it after the Pale of Calais was reconquered from the English in 1558.
