W. OWEN, FLEET STREET, LONDON - 1759
Some Background Information about the Cartographer Emanuel Bowen
EMANUEL BOWEN (fl.1714-1767) was not only a cartographer, he also sold and engraved prints as well as publishing books in London (Although this work was published and sold by W. Owen). He was the appointed engraver of maps for King George II of England and Louis XV of France, however, he died nearly blind and penniless. His son, Thomas, who continued the family business didn't have any more luck than his father and died in a workhouse at Clerkenwell in 1790.
Bowen was considered a notable name in the 1700s along with John Senex, Robert Sayer, Thomas Kitchin, John Rocque, Thomas Jeffreys and John Cary. He worked in London from approximately 1714 and produced some of the most attractive county maps of the century.
Bowen's plans for producing a large county atlas were beyond his means so he teamed up with Thomas Kitchin to produce "The Large English Atlas." The individual maps from this atlas were issued prior to its completion from 1749, the atlas being published in c.1760. Unusually these maps had topographical and historical information printed in the area around the maps that would have otherwise been blank. He later continued to team up with Kitchin in other publications, also he worked with John Owen, John Gibson, Benjamin Martin (for this work) and his son Thomas Bowen.
Bowen's work can also be found in the following: Maps of the Continents - c.1714; Asia - 1714; World - 1717; Cusco - 1720; Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improved - 1720; A Complete System of Geography - 1744-47; Complete Collection of Voyages - 1744-48; A New and Accurate map of Scotland or North Britain - 1746; A new and accurate map of Scotland - 1747; Complete Atlas or Distinct View of the Known World - 1752; The Large English Atlas - 1755-60; Atlas Minimus - 1758 (re-issued in 1774); The Royal English Atlas - 1762 (re-issued: 1778 and 1780; re-issued as The English Atlas - 1794-1828); America - 1763; Universal History of the World - 1766; Atlas Anglicanus - 1767 (re-issued in 1777); The World Showing the Discoveries of Capt. Cook and other Circumnavigators - c.1777 and History of England (Rapin) - c.1784.
