Some Background Information about this Publication and the Cartographer John Cary

This publication was requested by the postmaster general and was based on a brand new survey of the English and Welsh turnpike roads. Aaron Arrowsmith assisted John Cary from 1780, in carrying out this survey. The work was extremely popular and was a primary influence in the preliminary work of the Ordinance Survey office, (est. 1791). This particular work was first published in 1790 and continued until 1828.

JOHN CARY (ca.1754-1835) was an engraver, globe maker and cartographer. He was seen as one of the most superlative of English cartographers. Although the maps were not as decorative as the earlier 18th century maps were, they came about at a time when roads were being used as never before, and therefore the need for accurate road maps was imminent. The skill that Cary possessed both in engraving and craftsmanship enabled him to produce works of an extremely high standard. His maps were not only accurate but clear to the reader also. His work covered all types of maps including canal maps and celestial globes.

His work was continually updated as explorers discovered and named lakes etc. and when new provinces were formed around the world, particularly India and Australia. Cary's works were some of the most popular in the early 19th century. His work was re-issued in enlarged form. Cary was an extremely productive maker of plates of maps of all kinds and of all parts of the world. His plates were used by other publishers far into the 19th century. Also his work was developed by James Wyld and Tallis & Co.

He had two sons: George and John, who continued his business and later passed it on to G. F. Crutchley (fl. 1822-75). Cary's plates were used by Crutchley throughout his life and it is even thought that some of them were still in use in the early 20th century.

Here is a list of many of Cary's publications:

Actual Survey of the country fifteen miles round London (8vo) - 1786; New and Correct English Atlas (4to) - 1787 (re-issued 1793-1831); Camden's Britannia - 1789 (re-issued 1806); Cary's Travellers' Companion (8vo) - 1790 (re-issued 1791-1828); New Maps of England and Wales with part of Scotland (4to) - 1794; Cary's New Itinerary - 1798-1828 (re-issued 11 times); New British Atlas - 1805 (With J. Stockdale); Cary's New Universal Atlas - 1808; Cary's English Atlas - 1809 (re-issued 1811, 1818, 1828, 1834); New Elementary Atlas - 1813; Wm Camden's Britannia: New and Correct maps of the South and North parts of Scotland - 1789 (re-issued 1806); The Travellers' Companion: A Map of Scotland - 1790 and Cary's New Universal Atlas: A New map of Scotland - 1808.
