Maria Beadnell

Charles' first love was a banker's daughter, Maria Beadnell, whom he met in 1830. They were happy for three years until the relationship came to an end, not because of their feelings for each other, but because of Maria's parents. They thought that Charles was an inappropriate match for their daughter.

Charles seemed to be indignant about this later when he depicted Maria, in 'Little Dorrit,' this portrayal was not very flattering to her (Little Dorrit herself was allegedly based on Catherine Hogarth's younger sister Mary, a young lady that Charles cared deeply for. She died in 1837).

Catherine Hogarth

Two years later, in 1835, Charles met and became engaged to Catherine Hogarth, the daughter of the editor George Hogarth whom Charles called 'Friend'. They married on April 2nd 1836 and Catherine bore him 10 children (seven boys and three girls).

The family travelled widely to France, Italy, Switzerland etc. Although much of Charles' time was spent collecting data for more periodicals.

They separated after twenty-two years, in 1858. After all Charles, although brilliant and charming was emotionally insecure (probably due to his childhood) and therefore was probably extremely hard to live with. His methods of working also took up a great deal of his time, leaving little time to spend with Catherine and their 10 children.

Ellen Lawless Ternan

Charles became acquainted with the actress Ellen Ternan when she joined the cast of his theatrical company in August 1858. Being an actress, she was probably quite outspoken, a contrast to the meek persona that Catherine would seem to have from the manner in which Daniel Maclise, a friend of Charles', portrayed her in her portrait, (See portrait of Catherine to the left).

Ellen and Charles remained close until they were parted in 1870, the year that Charles died. Her name and personality is said to have influenced the heroines in Charles' three last novels (Great Expectations - Stella; Our Mutual Friend - Bella and The Mystery of Edwin Drood - Helena Lawless).

It seems that Ellen was a headstrong young lady, in that the characters inspired by her were not as meek and saintly as Charles' previous heroines. His preceding novels also lacked the perceptiveness when relating to sexual passion evident in the three novels named above.
