A Short Page Outlining the life and work of the Marine and Landscape artist
WILLIAM CLARKSON STANFIELD R. A. (1793-1867)
Born in Sunderland, Stanfield was the son of George, an Irish anti-slavery writer and actor.
He was articled to a heraldic painter in Edinburgh, but soon went to sea in 1808 and joined the Navy (unwillingly) in 1812. He travelled to China on an East Indian ship, where he met Douglas Jerrold who staged plays on board for which Stanfield painted the scenes. He left the Navy only six years after he joined to become a theatrical scene painter. He met David Roberts and moved to London with him in 1820 to become a scene painter at the Drury Lane Theatre, where he again met up with Douglas Jerrold (a successful partnership). Whilst in London he became friendly with Charles Dickens and Captain Marryat the latter of which he illustrated books for.
Clarkson's work as a scene painter brought him fame as an artist. The mixed audience of the theatre appreciated the beauty of landscapes and even artists learned from his work. His natural talent was obvious. Unfortunately the large paintings that Clarkson produced for the theatres were destroyed, although preliminary sketches may still exist.
In 1823, when the Society of British Artists (SBA) was founded, Clarkson became one of their principal exhibitors. However, his first large picture (that remained intact) was exhibited in 1827, at the Royal Institution. In that same year he also exhibited at the Royal Academy. Since that time Clarkson exhibited many works at the Academy, many of which were commissioned by people of high rank. He was also appointed to construct a series of canvases depicting the picturesque views in Venice for the Marquis of Lansdowne in 1830. As these were displayed in the Marquis' banqueting-room, he was selected by the Duchess of Sutherland to paint a similar series in 1834. In 1832 he was elected Associate to the Royal Academy and in 1835 he became a full member.
Stanfield's excursions included Holland, France, Italy and later in life he visited Scotland on more than one occasion. He produced many sketches on these trips, some of which were used in the annuals of the 1830s and others were translated onto canvas. Although his images were diverse in their subject matter, the seascapes were the most striking among his works. He depicted the sea with incredible accuracy, his images showing the truth of what he saw, with no exaggeration whilst also portraying the poetry around him.
