A Brief Outline of John Britton, Thomas Allom and W. H. Bartlett.

JOHN BRITTON (1771 - 1857) was originally a publican by trade. After his apprenticeship he went on to write ballads as well as dealing in hops. It wasn't until 1801 that he showed an interest in topography and began producing books in partnership with Edward Brayley. Their first Publication was entitled 'The Beauties of Wiltshire,' It was the first in a long line of topographical publications. After the seventh volume was produced, Britton seemed to lose interest in the 'beauties' series. However, he was succeeded by J. C. Smith (1778 - 1810), also a topographical draughtsman, and Britton continued to supply illustrations for the guides produced.

Britton was a self-made editor who was blessed with a great talent in the area. He called the artists that he gathered together 'scientific artists'. He later went on to produce an enormous biography which was completed and released 7 years before he died, at the age of 86.

THOMAS ALLOM (1804 -1872) was a topographical illustrator and architect. Born in London. Apprentice to Francis Goodwin as an architect.

Founder member of the RIBA and worked with Sir Charles Barry on numerous buildings. His works are generally in sepia washes and meticulous in design.

WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (1809 - 1854) was also a topographical illustrator who was articled to John Britton. He travelled in 1830, visiting Syria, Egypt, Palestine and America. He died on this voyage around the world at sea at the tender age of 45 years.

SOME GIFT IDEAS FROM JULIE

FOR THE HARD TO BUY FOR, perhaps a map or print of somewhere important in their lives. For example, where they were born, got married, went on honeymoon etc.
A general search should find that, I do have a wide selection of topographical views and historical maps. America's, UK, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, The World, Etc.
Or do a search for their last name, you will be surprised what you might discover.

This of course applies to anniversaries, graduations, births etc. For example some friends of mine are soon to celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary, so I am having the SILVER BIRCH FLOWER FAIRY matted & framed for them.

Or for the little person in your life, the Cicely M. Barker Flower Fairy Alphabet makes a wonderful keepsake if you buy the letters to spell their name.
For instance, t
he letters below spell M A R Y !
