Some Interesting Information about some of the Illustrators.

The following information is about the illustrators only and is intended only as a brief outline of their careers.

THOMAS ALLOM (1804-1872) was a topographical illustrator and architect. Born in London and apprenticed to Francis Goodwin as an architect. He was a founder member of the RIBA and worked with Sir Charles Barry on numerous buildings. His works are generally in sepia washes and meticulous in design.

WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (1809 - 1854) was also a topographical illustrator who was articled to John Britton. He travelled extensively, visiting Syria, Egypt, Palestine and America. He died on this voyage around the world at sea at the tender age of 45 years.

DAVID COX (1783-1859) was a landscape painter and watercolourist. He began his career with the Birmingham Theatre as a scene painter. Cox was born in Birmingham, England, and moved to London in 1803 where he became an extremely influential practitioner and drawing-master. He travelled abroad in 1826 to study colour and later became a precursor of Impressionism.

WILLIAM PURSER (1790-1852) was primarily an architect. However, like many architects at the time (e.g. Thomas Allom) he was also a topographical draughtsman. He began to study at the Royal Academy in London in 1807 and travelled in Greece and Italy with John Sanders where he undertook some momentous archaeological work.

THOMAS HOSMER SHEPHERD (c.1817-c.1842) was a topographical illustrator who was extremely talented and was able to produce works of outstanding beauty and skill. Frederick Crace employed him to illustrate views of London in c.1829. He also draughted views of Edinburgh, Bath and Bristol which were published in the mid-nineteenth century.

The other artists featured in this work are: A. VICKERS, C. BENTLEY, G. SHARPE, J. SALMON, T. S. ROBINS, J. B. PYNE, E. PRITCHETT, J. PHILLIPS, C. MARSHALL and W. DANIEL R. A.
