A Brief outline of Fullarton and Co.

FULLARTON AND CO. (fl. 1840-70) were based in Glasgow, (1834-70); London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, (1840-3); London, Edinburgh and Dublin, (1845). They published gazetteers of England and Wales, Scotland and the World. They also published atlases of the world, both as a hand atlas and a larger version.

Their Publications include:

New & Comprehensive (later became Parliamentary) Gazetteer of England & Wales. (1834, published until 1849)

Imp. Gazetteer of Scotland, 1854-7.

Gazetteer of the World, 1856.

Royal Illustrated Atlas, 1864. (Published in 27 parts 1854-62).

Hand Atlas of the World, 1870-2.

Some Information about the Engraver and Illustrator W. B. SCOTT

WILLIAM BELL SCOTT (1811-1890) was an Illustrator, poet, critic and painter. He was the son of the engraver Robert Scott and studied art with him. Scott then studied at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh. His elder brother David was also an illustrator and painter and they both worked for their father in the engraving business. In 1837 Scott travelled to London in order to earn a living as an illustrator. This venture wasn't entirely successful and Scott turned to painting. He entered a design for the Houses of Parliament Cartoon Competition which wasn't successful, however, the following year he was appointed master of the School of Design in Newcastle-upon-tyne and remained there until 1863. Scott gained considerable expertise as a mural painter and constructed major pieces at Wallington Hall, Northumberland, England and Penkill Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland where he died in 1890.
