CONTENTS AND DESCRIPTION
A veritable chef d'oeuvre! Holland was
Director of the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh and held many other
prestigious posts. The book is dedicated to Andrew Carnegie 'whose name is a
synonym for financial sagacity and practical benevolence'.
This book chronicles the Moths of North America, north of
Mexico, in amazing depth and detail. This book follows his earlier Book of
Butterflies.
Most of the colour plates are based on his own collection. Every plate is
discretely numbered with an accompanying list of the species shown on a
separate leaf. See illustration below left.
The plates were produced by the American
Colortype Company, of New York & Chicago.
In addition, there are 263 small
uncoloured prints and illustrations within the text, which both
describes and sources the habitats of the innumerable species catalogued.
