Peter Parley's (pseudonym for Samuel Griswold Goodrich).
At twenty-three years of age, Goodrich entered into a publishing venture with a friend, and began to publish school and juvenile books, a few of which he wrote himself. In 1826, after a second marriage, Goodrich removed to Boston and began to publish "The Token," one of the best in the way of American gift-book annuals, and the one in which many of Hawthorne's tales first appeared. In 1827 Goodrich published 'The Tales of Peter Parley about America,' the first of more than one hundred volumes bearing the Peter Parley name, in which a 'kindly and omniscient old gentleman is represented as talking to a group of priggishly inquiring children, and instruction is given a thin sugar-coating of fiction. They met the needs of the time and sold by the million. In 1833 he founded 'Parley's Magazine' for children, which he sold the following year, and in 1841 he established 'Robert Merrys Museum', another juvenile periodical. . . . Much controversy has arisen over the claim of Goodrich to the authorship of works that he published, and particularly to that of some of the Peter Parley books. . . . It is well known that Hawthorne compiled one of the books. . . . " [DAB].
