Some Background Information about the Prints and the Illustrator Samuel Prout
The prints in this work are very early lithographs, and as such they are more like a pencil drawing. The standard of these prints is very high, and due to their large size (some 14x21 inches - Engraved area: 280x425 mm) they lend themselves to great detail. They are a very early example of lithography and were made before the process was adapted to mechanization. Therefore, they were not mass produced and are quite scarce.
The perspective in these images is expressed not only in the buildings but also in the figures within the complete image and the textures of the various surfaces depicted. Samuel Prout was one of the masters of this kind of imagery. His attention to detail is exquisite. It is even possible to see the texture of the walls of the buildings and the names of the businesses in the foreground can be clearly seen.
The peoples are expressed going about their normal business, from standing around having a chat with other locals to doing their laundry or shopping.
These prints show the magnificent architecture to be found in these regions and would make good reference material to those studying this subject.
