THE CHRISTIAN IN PALESTINE
OR, SCENES OF SACRED HISTORY, HISTORICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE
BY HENRY STEBBING, D. D., F. R. S.
GEORGE VIRTUE, LONDON - c.1847

Some Background Information About the Prints and the Illustrator: W. H. Bartlett

WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (1809 - 1854) was a topographical illustrator who was articled to John Britton. He travelled extensively, visiting Syria, Egypt, Palestine and America. He died on this voyage around the world at sea at the tender age of 45 years. Click on either of the links above to view further publications illustrated by Bartlett.

The prints in this publication are elegant and sensitive. They are of a standard that one comes to expect from the work of William Henry Bartlett.

The detail in these images is intricate, every leaf on a tree is depicted as are the features on the faces of the people. The populace are shown going about their normal business expressing their culture, also their traditional dress is evident. The men are shown carrying spears in many instances and many of the women are depicted carrying pots upon their heads.

The principal transportation (on land) is by camel although in some of the prints there are horses or mules. The people are generally in groups indicating that they are sociable, but the sexes are segregated by their mannerisms.

In conclusion, the prints in this work are interesting not only on a theological level but also aesthetically. They show the methods of travel and the wilderness is wildly beautiful.
