Kirkwood, Robert

Robert Kirkwood (1774-1818), worked from Edinburgh as an engraver and printer. Originally in partnership with his father, James Kirkwood, he published under his own name from 1814. Notable for his maps of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres on the Polar Projections (1814), plans of Edinburgh (1817), and "Kirkwood's General Atlas" (1817). He obtained a patent for an improved rolling press design, and advised the Bank of England on printing bank notes. The Edinburgh firm of Alexander Kirkwood & Son, engravers of medals, continues to this day
