Some Background Information about the Maps and the Cartographer

The maps in this publication are centred around France, its departments and possessions worldwide. Many of the individual departments are adorned with vignette views and make an interesting gift. Although the title suggests that they are ornate maps, they are not as decorative as some French maps of the period, (eg: Levasseur.) However, they are clear and precise and the maps themselves are not overwhelmed by decoration (see example below).

These maps also contain interesting information (in French) about the department or possession depicted. The general map of France showing the departments is coloured, although the others are not, showing that Monin only used colour where necessary and found the map itself was more important.

CHARLES V. MONIN was a geographer in Paris and Caen, France.

Other publications: Atlas Universel de Geographie... - 1835; Atlas Classique - 1844-5; France - [1868] and Mappemonde - 1875.
