Some Background Information about the Maps and the Cartographer

The historical influence is clearly visible in the type of maps that were produced in this work. There are not only maps of the world but also ancient representations of many countries and continents as well as maps of the Empires of Alexander the Great, the Monguls, china and the Romans. The maps of Europe, for example, show the continent in various time periods. They would be invaluable in an investigation, or presentation of geographical history. The research that has gone into this work is extensive, as the maps listed below show.

VICTOR ADOLF MALTE-BRUN (1816-1889) was the son of the Danish geographer Conrad Malte-Brun, who moved to Paris approx. 1800 and worked with the French historian Edmé Mentelle on many of his works. Victor continued his father's work reproducing this atlas after his father died.

Jacques Bossuet (1627 - 1704), the French Bishop & author, wrote that Geography is one of the principal eyes of History.
