Morden, Robert

Robert Morden (c1650-1703) was an English bookseller, publisher, and maker of maps and globes. Although not regarded as the most technically gifted cartographer, he was nevertheless among the first successful commercial map makers, operating from premises in Cheapside and Cornhill where he carried on business under the sign of The Atlas . We stock the maps for which he is best-known - his decorative English county maps, and maps of Wales, which were published in the English language edition of Camden's Britannia in 1695, reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. In 1701 he published a series of smaller county maps known as the “Morden Miniatures”. He is also known for his scarce early maps of the British colonies in North America. He produced sets of geographical playing cards (1676), and a series of atlases, including his Atlas Terrestris (1695) and Geography Anatomiz'd.
