Some Background Information on The Overland Route and W. H. Bartlett
The Overland Route is a topographical book. It contains views in Egypt, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta and Spain. Text was also written on each of the views depicted, outlining history and describing in more detail the surrounding countryside and, at times the culture of some of the native peoples.
This work was printed at a time when books of this sort were extremely fashionable. Before photography was invented, the only way that people could keep pictorial reference of landmarks (unless they were artistically inclined), was by this method. It was a means to show their associates the wonders of foreign lands, although its purpose was to show travellers what a place looked like and where the interesting sites were. In fact the appendix of the book contains directions for travellers wishing to follow the route outlined.
Nowadays prints of this type are interesting in a more historical way. They show how the landscape has changed, particularly in towns and cities.
WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (1809-1854) was a topographical illustrator who was articled to John Britton. He travelled in 1830, visiting Syria, Egypt, Palestine and America. He died on this voyage around the world, at sea at the tender age of 45 years.
We supply genuine historical maps and prints by mail order - all are eminently suitable for framing and are offered On Approval.
