Some Interesting Information about the Universum.

Payne's Universum is a selection of appropriate, diversified and interesting specimens from approved and known masters. They have all been engraved to the highest standards of pictorial work. The Universum is a work comprising of every branch of the arts in the mid 19th century ie: Portraiture, dramatic and fictitious scenes, landscapes and views, fanciful and imaginary representations and historical records of past events.

The content of Payne's Universum is indeed diverse. Most people would find images that would be of interest, all of which are of a high standard and therefore all the more appealing. They are all beautiful steel engravings, which by nature are delicate and detailed. The Portraits are highly decorated, most including vignettes of related scenes or subjects. The Illustrations of Student's Life in Germany are particularly decorative. Many of the prints also depict the culture of different peoples around the world.

This work began as an attempt to collate all, or as much of the above from around the world as possible, however, this was such a mamouth task that it was not continued beyond 1st October, 1847. (They could have still been producing the Universum today if they had continued and it may have become 'tired'.)

The Working life of a John Wykeman Archer (One of the Illustrators)

JOHN WYKEHAM ARCHER ARWS (1808-1864) was a topographical illustrator and watercolourist. He was born on August 2nd 1808 in Newcastle-upon-tyne, England and moved to London 1820 in order to become an apprentice engraver. He was articled to John Scott (animal engraver) and on completion of his apprenticeship, he moved back to Newcastle and in partnership with William Collard, he worked as an engraver. He later worked in Edinburgh, Scotland and moved back to London in 1831 where he worked for W. and E. FINDEN. In time he began to work more and more in watercolour although he still produced wood engravings in the 1840s and continued to produce topographical images for engraving. Archer became Associate to the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (ARWS) in 1842. He died on 25th May 1864, in London.
