ARTIST:
THOMAS HOSMER SHEPHERD
(c.1817-c.1842) was a topographical
illustrator who was extremely talented and was able to produce works of
outstanding beauty and skill. Frederick Crace employed him to
illustrate views of London in c.1829. He
also draughted views of Edinburgh, Bath and Bristol which were published in the
mid-nineteenth century. Shepherd's work can be found in the following: Excursions in the County of Kent
- 1822; Metropolitan Improvements - 1827; London and it's Environs in the Nineteenth
Century - 1829; Modern
Athens Displayed (or Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century) - 1829;
Bath and Bristol - 1829-30 and London Interiors - 1841.
A fine
series
of views of the Capital of Scotland, with many excellent, busy street scenes
and markets, principal landmarks and public buildings, The Castle, Leith,
showing both commercial and residential architecture Many are enhanced by
the inclusion of interesting figures & children dressed the fashions of the
era, horses, carriages, coaches & carts.

Norfolk squire. He was related by marriage to Charles Dickens and they were
firm friends.

The pictures feature the
principal towns and cities in this English County, 'The Garden of England',
together with ancient monuments, abbeys, castles, stately and country houses
and homes, Etc. Many feature ships, boats, rural farming activities, cattle, sheep, deer,
etc. in the early part of the nineteenth century. The Kentish coast runs
from the River Thames Estuary, The Cinque Ports and on to the English Channel Ports. Some of the
views include areas which were formerly in Kent, but which have since
been absorbed into London.
