THE VINTAGE IN BURGUNDY. A good full page montage of views,
showing the grape harvest. 1871. SOURCE WIKIPEDIA:- Burgundy is
one of France's main wine producing areas, well known for both
its red and white wines, mostly made from Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay grapes respectively, although other grape varieties
can be found including Gamay, Aligote, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon
Blanc. The region is divided into the Côte-d'Or, where the most
expensive and prized Burgundies are found, and Beaujolais,
Chablis, the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâcon.
The reputation and quality of the top wines, together with the
fact that they are often produced in tiny quantities, has led to
high demand and high prices, with some Burgundies ranking among
the most expensive wines in the world. |

THE EAST LONDON HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN. Double Page. 1872. This
print depicts the kinder aspects of Victorian England. [ DETAILS
FROM WIKIPEDIA: Dr. Nathaniel Heckford (1842 - 1871) was a
paediatrician in Victorian London, who founded the East London
Hospital for Children. He met his future wife, Sarah Goff,
during the 1866 cholera epidemic in Wapping, where he first
determined a need for a children's hospital in East London.
Heckford himself died of consumption at the age of 29.
The hospital started in 1868 in a warehouse in Ratcliffe, and
moved after Heckford's death to Glamis Road, Shadwell. It was
the first London hospital for children under two years of age.
The name of the hospital was changed to the Princess Elizabeth
of York Hospital for Children in 1932, and later became part of
the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children in 1942. It was closed
in 1963.] |

Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is located on the western
foothills of the Black Forest, on the banks of the Oos River, in
the region of Karlsruhe. The German word 'Baden' translates as
'to bath/bathe'. The springs of Baden-Baden were known to the
Romans, and the foundation of the town is referred to the
emperor Hadrian by an inscription of somewhat doubtful
authenticity. The name of Aurelia Aquensis was given to it in
honour of Aurelius Severus, in whose reign it would seem to have
been well known. Fragments of its ancient sculptures are still
to be seen, and in 1847 remains of Roman vapour baths, well
preserved, were discovered just below the New Castle.] |

VIEW OF BLENHEIM PALACE, FROM THE LAKE. Full Page 1861. Fine
engraving. [From Wikipedia: Blenheim Palace is a large and
monumental country house situated in Woodstock, Oxfordshire,
England. It is the only non-episcopal country house in England
to hold the title "palace". The Palace, one of England's largest
houses, was built between 1705 and circa 1724. It was recognised
as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Its construction was originally intended to be a gift to John
Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough from a grateful nation in
return for military triumph against the French and Bavarians.
However, it soon became the subject of political infighting,
which led to Marlborough's exile, the fall from power of his
Duchess, and irreparable damage to the reputation of the
architect Sir John Vanbrugh. Designed in the rare, and
short-lived, English baroque style, architectural appreciation
of the palace is as divided today as it was in the 1720s.[1] It
is unique in its combined usage as a family home, mausoleum and
national monument. The palace is also notable as the birthplace
and ancestral home of Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill] |

by Charles Dickens, published in twenty monthly instalments
between March 1852 and September 1853. It is held to be one of
Dickens's finest novels, containing one of the most vast,
complex and engaging arrays of minor characters and sub-plots in
his entire canon. Dickens tells all of these both through the
narrative of the novel's heroine, Esther Summerson, and as an
omniscient narrator. Memorable characters include the menacing
lawyer Tulkinghorn, the friendly but depressive John Jarndyce
and the childish Harold Skimpole.) |
