AFTER HAVING VISITED THE KHEDIVE. Henry Morton STANLEY
(1841-1904) was the famous explorer who found Dr. Livingstone.
Coincidentally, also in 1841, Samuel Shephaerd, an Englishman,
became manager of the then British Hotel, Cairo. He bought it 4
years later and renamed it Shepheard's Hotel. It became a very
famous international Hotel in Victorian times. |

By Henry Charles Seppings Wright (1850-1937). Cornelis Dircksen
began the first ferry between Manhattan and Brooklyn in about
1630-40. In 1814 a lease was granted by the City of New York to
the Fulton Ferry Company, Robert Fulton and William Cutting.
Note the eager young shoe shine boy at work ! The Ferry was
named CLINTON ! |

to lose to W. Hamilton, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in the final.
