streets of Coventry, in England, in order to gain a remission of
the oppressive taxation imposed by her husband on his tenants. |

SWAN UPPING ON THE THAMES ABOVE WINDSOR. Berkshire. According
to Wikipedia: Swan Upping is an annual ceremonial and practical
activity in Britain in which mute swans on the River Thames are
rounded up, caught, marked, and then released. Traditionally,
the Monarch of the United Kingdom owns all unmarked mute swans
on the River Thames. This dates from the 12th century, during
which swans were a common food source for royalty. Swan upping
is a means of establishing a swan census, and today also serves
to check the health of swans. Under a Royal Charter of the 15th
century, the Vintners' Company and the Dyers' Company, two
Livery Companies of the City of London, are entitled to share in
the Sovereign's ownership. They conduct the census through a
process of ringing the swan's feet, but the swans are no longer
eaten. |

PRESENTATION OF A LIFEBOAT BY THE CADETS OF THE THAMES NAUTICAL
COLLEGE SHIP, WORCESTER. 'THE CHEERS FOR THE LIFEBOAT'. Artist
W. H. Overend. According to Wikipedia: The Thames Nautical
Training College, as it is now called, was, for over a hundred
years, situated aboard ships named HMS Worcester.
London shipowners, marine insurance underwriters and merchants
subscribed to its founding as an institution which would provide
trained officers for a sea-going career. The British Admiralty
loaned the 50-gun, 1,500-ton frigate HMS Worcester (1843) for
the scheme, and in 1862 the Thames Marine Officer Training
School was opened. She was to find her eventual home off
Greenhithe, in the Thames, in 1871, after temporary berths at
Blackwall, Erith and Southend.
The college expanded and the Admiralty provided the college with
HMS Frederick William (originally laid down as Royal Sovereign),
a line-of-battle ship of 86 guns with screw propulsion. She was
renamed Worcester and refitted in the Victoria Docks before
being brought to Greenhithe in 1876. About this time the name of
the school was changed to the Incorporated Thames Nautical
Training College, HMS Worcester (ITNTC). |

A SAVAGE CLUB DINNER - A PORTRAIT GROUP. A famous London Club,
known for its Bohemian traditions. According to Wikipedia: Two
possible explanations are known to exist for the club's name.
The first is that it was named, "in a frolicsome humour", after
Richard Savage, "...a thoroughly disreputable actor and
playwright of Dr Johnson's time who killed a man in a brawl and
was later imprisoned for debt".
The second possibility is that a waitress, when instructed by
the barman at the club's first home to take a round of drinks to
the company assembled upstairs, and on hearing the noise of
drunken merriment coming from the club room, exclaimed, "What!
I'm not serving that bunch of savages!".
Whatever the explanation, the name stuck (as did the tradition
of drunken merriment), and to this day, members are known to
each other as "Brother Savage". There is some interesting text

ALFRED TENNYSON. POET LAUREATE. Interesting related text below
the portrait & verso. According to Wikipedia: 'Alfred Tennyson,
1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892), much
better known as "Alfred, Lord Tennyson," was Poet Laureate of
the United Kingdom during much of Queen Victoria's reign and
remains one of the most popular poets in the English language.
Tennyson was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire, a rector's son and
fourth of 12 children. He was a descendant of King Edward III of
England. Reportedly, "the pedigree of his grandfather, George
Tennyson, is traced back to the middle-class line of the
Tennysons, and through Elizabeth Clayton ten generations back to
Edmund, Duke of Somerset, and farther back to Edward III." ' |
