TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY OF MAPMAKERS - R V Tooley
ALLOM Thomas (1804-1872)
Allom was born in London, England on 13th March 1804. He was
articled to Francis Goodwin, an architect in 1819.
He was to become a founder member of the R.I.B.A. (Royal Institute of British
Architects - which is still the premier institution today)
He is best know for his topographical drawings, so many of which were engraved
on steel & appeared in many of the travel books of the time. He travelled
extensively, not just in the UK & Europe, but further afield, covering such
countries as Turkey & China.
Collections of his work can be found in the British Museum and the Victoria
& Albert Museum.
CLARKE Joseph Clayton. 'Kyd' (1856-1937)
Clarke worked on a freelance basis under around 1900
and then specialised in fore-edge painting.
He is perhaps best know for his caricatures of Dickens
Characters.
Rather eccentric by nature and not very frugal.
FINNEMORE Joseph (1860-1939)
Illustrated various books including such as The White Man's Foot
(1888) &
Kingsley's Westward Ho!
Wrote & illustrated The Animal's Circus, published 1915.
SIMKIN Richard (1840-1926)
Based in Aldershot, Hants, UK which is a 'military' town.
Specialised in watercolours of uniforms and in the design of posters for recruitment to the army.
His work seems to have been published mainly in the 1890's.
A Collection of his work can be found at The India Office Library.
SHEPHERD Thomas Hosmer (c.1817 to 1842)
He specialised in topographical drawings, which were engraved
for such as Metropolitan Improvements (London), Modern Athens (Edinburgh) and
Bath & Bristol. Many of these were enlivened by the additional of figures,
horses, carriages etc.
Had he not died at such a young age, he would no doubt have emulated such as William
Bartlett and Thomas Allom, who travelled widely.
Collections of his work can be found in the British Museum.
STANFIELD William Clarkson (1793-1867)
Born in Sunderland, County Durham, the son of an Irish actor.
Apprenticed in Edinburgh, but was 'pressed' into service at Sea in 1812. This
took him, among other places to the Far East. Left the Navy 1818 & began
painting for the theatre. Became a friend of David Roberts and soon after they
went to London, began to enjoy some success. Another friend was Charles Dickens.
Elected to the Royal Academy in 1835. Travelled extensively in Europe. Drew
seascapes & city scenes. Died Hampstead, London 18th May 1867. Collections
of his work can be found in the British Museum and The Victoria & Albert.
