The River Thames is situated in the south of England. It is approximately 210 miles long and passes through the cities of Oxford, Reading and London, Finally reaching the North Sea at Sheerness, Kent. The Thames is tidal as far as west London. It Rises in the Cotswold Hills in Glocestershire. The Counties it passes through are: Glocestershire, Wiltshire (Briefly), Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, London and Kent. It forms the northern border of Berkshire and hence the southern border of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

The Medway rises in the North Downs in Surrey and joins the Thames Estuary at Sheerness approximately 10 miles north-east of Gillingham. It passes through the counties of Surrey, Sussex and Kent and is only 70 miles long.

The images in this publication are all engravings of drawings from nature rather than from primarily imagined images (available at the time), which, although beautiful, did not depict the landscape accurately. The editor was adamant that the pictures were as accurate as possible and were inspected attentively.
