Some Background Information About the Illustrator

WILLIAM WESTALL A.R.A (1785-1850) was a topographical illustrator in the early 19th century. He was born in 1785 in Hertford, England, the younger brother of Richard Westall with whom he studied at the Royal Academy schools. William was chosen by Benjamin West (President of the Royal Academy) to accompany, as artist, the Finders expedition to Australia. He visited India and China on his return in 1803-4 and he travelled to Jamaica and Madeira in approximately 1808. In 1810 Westall was elected AOWS, but he resigned in 1812, when he was elected Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA). From 1812 until he died on January 22nd 1850, William painted English topography.

William Westall's work can also be found in the following publications: Views of the scenery of Madeira, at the Cape, in China and India - 1811; Views of Australian Scenery - 1814; Views of the Yorkshire Caves - 1818; Victories of the Duke of Wellington - 1819; Britannia Delineata - 1822; Scenery, Costumes and Architecture of India - Grindlay, 1826-30; Picturesque Tour of the Thames - 1828; Ackerman's History of Rugby School - 1816; Ackerman's Repository - 1825; Illustrations of Warwickshire - 1829 and Landscape Album - 1832.
