The Hop Exchange

The Hop and Malt Exchange was officially opened on 9th September 1868 as the biggest of all the exchanges. The central feature of the building is the Exchange Hall (Atrium) where the hops and malt were once traded. Although the building suffered fire damage in 1918, destroying the ornamental roof and some of the upper floors, fortunately many of the original features were saved. The building has been meticulously and faithfully restored by the Peer Group PLC. Since the demolition of the Coal Exchange in the City during the 1960’s, it is a unique survival in London of a building type that was once so important in the commercial life of the metropolis in the 19th century.
