TITLE OF THE MAP: Afrique publiée sous les auspices de Monseigneur Le Duc d'Orleans [Africa published under the auspices of Monseigneur the Duke of Orleans]

This large eighteenth century map of Africa includes the "Pays des Hotentots" (in modern South Africa), "Etat de Manomotapa" (Mozambique), Abyssinia, Egpyt, Nubia, the Kingdoms of Morocco, Fez, Algiers, Tunis & Congo. The island of Reunion is indicated under two of its previous names (Ile de Bourbon & Mascarenhas), and Mauritius, named "Ile de France" is also indicated under its "previous" name of Ile Maurice, and also Ile do Cirne. The map reflects the lack of European knowledge of the paths of the rivers of the continent at the time. The Senegal river system is confused with part of the Niger river. The river marked on the map as the "Riv. de Guin ou d'Iça qui est le Niger", passing through Timbuctu, is shown as being an entirely inland river system which does not find its way to the sea. Some text on the map discusses the possible (but then unknown) source of the Nile, which is indicated on the map as being two lakes in the legendary Mountains of the Moon, shown on the map as approximately located in what is today the Central African Republic.
