The map was originally engraved prior to or during the Texas Republic, and borders on the map have been drawn to show Texas as being part of Mexico. The hand colouring, applied at the date of publication in 1846, instead includes Texas within the United States, the state having acceded to the United States the previous year. The US/Mexican border shows the position prior to the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. Cotidal lines are marked on the map
