PROVENANCE: THE DANUBE , ITS HISTORY, SCENERY, AND TOPOGRAPHY By William Beattie . ARTIST William Henry Bartlett was born in Kentish Town, London in 1809. The young Bartlett was apprenticed to John BRITTON 1771-1857. He became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation, travelling not just throughout Britain, but to the United States & Canada in 1839/42. In the mid/late 1840's he travelled extensively in the Balkans and Middle East. He died of fever on board ship returning from his last trip, to Israel, in 1854. Splendid topographical views along the River Danube, embracing AUSTRIA , österreich, BULGARIA CZECH GERMANY , HUNGARY , ROMANIA . SERBIA Servia Balkans . Many show figures in traditional Dress, ancient castles, famous buildings, cathedrals, churches, street scenes and well known landmarks with fascinating architecture. Many of the excellent landscapes feature the River, with boats, timber rafts and fishermen at work. Others show timber rafts being navigated along the Donau. The boundaries of many places in the Balkans Area having changed over the many years since this picture was drawn. Some may not currently be part of the Country shown in the title
