Baedeker, Karl / Wagner & Debes

We have an extensive range of antique maps from the authoritative Baedeker guide books including town plans & city plans, topographical maps and other touring and leisure maps covering Europe, North America and the Mediterranean. Pioneered by Karl Baedeker in 1827, the modern travel guidebook genre evolved from the published travelogues of aristocrats on the European "Grand Tour" to offer more informative and organised content for the growing number of overseas tourists. This content included maps and plans supplied by cartographers Eduard Wagner & Ernst Debes from offices adjacent to the Baedeker's Leipzig premises. In his history of the publisher, Herbert Warren Wind noted that their maps were a critical component of the success of the guides "providing them not only with the best maps in the world, many in colour, but also with superb ground plans of palaces, churches, gardens, museums and castles, and with some extraordinary panoramas of Alpine ranges and other vistas .... the sheer technical skill of Wagner & Debes kept the guides well ahead of their rivals" . The maps cover Germany, Austria-Hungary, France, Italy, Switzerland, Great Britain, Norway and Sweden, Greece, Spain, Portugal, the United States, Mexico and Egypt
