Tanzania | German East Africa | Tanganyika & Zanzibar

Our catalogues of maps and prints illustrate the history from pre-colonial times to present day of Tanzania including its precursor states of German East Africa, Tanganyika Territory & Zanzibar. German East Africa (Deutsch-Ostafrika) was organised into a colony in the 1880's in the African Great Lakes region which included present-day Burundi, Rwanda, the Tanzania mainland, and the Kionga Triangle, a small region later incorporated into Mozambique. It persisted until Imperial Germany's defeat in World War I. It was divided under League of Nations Mandate in 1922, the largest parts of which were entrusted to Great Britain (Tanganyika Territory) and Belgium, whose trusteeship eventually became present-day Rwanda and Burundi. Tanganyika, the mainland part of present-day Tanzania, existed as a sovereign state from the date of its independence from the United Kingdom in 1961 until 1964, when it joined with the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The new state changed its name to the United Republic of Tanzania within a year.

We have a range of maps of the region by Mallet (1683) illustrating early European contact with the region, later views and sketch maps from the early colonial period (1880's and 1890's), and some military maps illustrating the East African campaign of the First World War.
