CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: To My Worthy and Learned friend The Honourable Daines Barrington This plan of two attempts to arrive at the source of the Nile is dedicated by his most Obliged and faithful Humble servant James Bruce [Lake Tana]

James Bruce was a Scottish traveller who confirmed the source of the Blue Nile. This map shows his routes taken to the source which is shown bottom left. On his return to London in 1774 his account, published by James Boswell in the London Magazine, was met with incredulity. Offended, he retired and did not publish his own account until 1790 upon the urging of his friend Barrington to whom the map is dedicated. This map was published within his 'Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile'. The accuracy of his account has since been established
