'Asie' by Jacques Liozu (1951). Mid 20th century colour pictorial map, 36.0 x 50.0cm, 14 x 19.5 inches

CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Asie'

A 1951 pictorial map of continent of Asia south of the USSR by French illustrator Jacques Liozu, encompassing the region from Arabia and the Mediterranean to the Pacific, including the East Indies. The countries are each shown in a different colour and are labelled, including French Indochina, which existed only a few years longer before independence, and East Pakistan, which would later separate from West Pakistan to become Bangladesh in 1971. The map features caricatures that reflect the prevailing European views of the time of national stereotypes. For example, an Indian is having trouble directing the richly adorned but stubborn elephant that he is riding, while nearby another Indian charms a snake. In Saudi Arabia, a figure struggles to lead an uncooperative camel, while another camel scene appears in China. Elsewhere, a Persian rides on a flying carpet, and a European tourist in Southeast Asia has been frightened by a tiger, while near Nankin, an overweight European is pulled in a rickshaw by a sweating Chinaman. The borders of Israel appear to reflect the UN partition plan of 1947, rather than the reality on the ground after the 1949 armistice. Tibet is shown as part of China, having lost its independence in the year of publication. The title cartouche is richly decorated with exotic Asian birds and animals. Illustrations of the flags of Asian nations, including the Colonial Powers, complete the border design.
