[William Bruce. All-rounder. Australia cricketer] For grace and elegance of style it would be difficult to name a batsman the superior of WILLIAM BRUCE, the Australian Cricketer. Representing Victoria in Inter-Colonial cricket at an early age, he came over to England in 1886 with the Fifth Australian Team as one of the best of the many good players in the Colonies. On this first trip he was out of luck and his play was rather a disappointment in the face of the high reputation he deservedly enjoyed at home. Though once here since, his best performances have been in Australia, where for some years he has been quite one of the first batsmen. A left-handed bat, he plays the ball hard at all times, and to a neat style adds great powers of hitting. Moreover he is not a brilliant field but a useful slow bowler. Australia has produced few better all-round Cricketers. As a captain, he has had few if any superiors among Australian Cricketers. Photograph by E. Hawkins & Co. (1895). Antique photographic book plate, 35.0 x 22.0cm, 13.75 x 8.5 inches
