CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Londinum - Urbs Praecipua Regni Angliae'

A Latin version of Pierre Aveline’s early pre-fire view of London taken from the south, first published in 1665, the year before the Fire of London. Southwark is visible in the foreground and includes figures on horseback and about their daily business, the Thames beyond is populated with a variety of vessels, while the spires of the City may be seen on the north bank of the Thames. St Paul's (pre-Wren and his dome) dominates the skyline and the spires of other City churches are discernible. A ten point numbered key identifies those buildings of note. The simple title appears in a decorative surround above the view. Although the title cartouche has been changed, the tower of St Paul’s Cathedral and other details continue to show the city in its pre-Fire state, including the Elizabethan theatres in Bankside. Scouloudi records this as a variant of the view published by Antoine Aveline (1691–1743) in the early eighteenth century, but she does not record the copy published by his father, Pierre Aveline. The present example could therefore be a variant on either the father’s or the son’s.
