CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: Underground Railways of London [694 11.5.25]

This is the first edition of an Underground geographic map designed by F H Stingemore. It is one of the first designs not to show any surface detail in an attempt to clarify the design. Each Underground line is shown by a different colour and interchanges are represented by a circle in the line colour. The Hampstead and Highgate line between Charing Cross and Kennington and the City and South London Railway line between Clapham Common and Morden are shown as being under construction. The District Railway, Bakerloo and Metropolitan Railway lines are not shown in full, and stations beyond the boundary of the map have their names in a box indicating the continuation of the line. On this edition of the map Wembley Exhibition Ground is marked (the exhibition was held between 9 May to 31 October 1925). The map has the title 'UndergrounD Railways Of London' and there is a reference key showing line colours. The front cover is linen on card, the title and 'Underground' roundel is printed in black on a red background. The maps lacks the River Thames which is shown on the April 1926 edition. The reverse of the map details some of the virtues of travel by underground. The Hampstead and Highgate line between Charing Cross and Kennington and the City and South London Railway line between Clapham Common and Morden are shown as being under construction.
