CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'A ground plot of ye strong fort of Charlemont in Ireland with the Town, River, Marshes, Boggs & places adjacent &ct'

The map was published within Story's continuation of his "Impartial History of the Wars of Ireland" (1693), for which Captain Samuel Hobson is believed to have contributed the maps. He was listed as a Williamite rebel against King James in the King’s 1689 Act of Attainder - subject to confiscation of his property - but he lived to see the king beaten at the Battle of the Boyne and forced into exile. His great-great grandson William Hobson was the future governor of New Zealand and the virtual founder of that country.
