TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: Nouvelle Carte des Decouvertes Faites Par des Vaisseaux Russiens aux cótes inconnues de l'Amerique Septentrionale avec les Pais Adiacents. Dressée sur des memoires authentiques de ceux qui ont assisté a ces decouvertes, et sur d'autres Connoissances. A. St. Peterbourg a l'Academie Imperiale des Sciences 1784 [New map of the discoveries made by Russians vessels in the unknown coasts of North America with the adjacent countries]

This is the Santini/Remondini updated edition of Gerhard Muller's landmark 1754 map showing the discoveries of Captains Bering and Chirikov, the first Russians to reach the North-West coast of North America. The map is a very approximate reflection of the actual shape of Alaska and the Pacific northwest coast, reflecting the limitations of European knowledge of the region at the time. Muller, a German scholar who worked for the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences, originally published his map in response to Delisle/Buache's speculative map that included the supposed discoveries of the (fabricated) Admiral de Fonte. Muller's original map was updated several times as European knowledge of the region increased
